NAT GEO's “Earth Explorers” Exhibit at the Springs Preserve April 6, 2019

National Geographic’s “Earth Explorers” Exhibit at the Springs Preserve

 

Embark on an epic adventure through six themed and immersive environments to discover new species, study animal behavior, and learn about the important roles that technology, innovation and ingenuity play in making and documenting scientific discoveries. Climb aboard an actual off-road explorer vehicle used by filmmakers and scientists before heading to the Earth’s poles and the bottom of the ocean. The, discovery highly evolved jungle animals in an outdoor lab and take a simulated balloon ride above Madagascar to watch a mammal migration. This exhibit showcases the work of some of the most innovative and exciting National Geographic explorers.

 

Join Geoman at the Springs Preserve anytime between 11am and 4pm. His plan is to have lunch at the Springs Café between 11am and 1pm . . . then hang out in the Earth Explorers exhibit between 1pm and 3pm . . . and finally, take in the Weekend Feature Film, Volcanoes (:50 minutes) in the Origins Theatre. GAIN teachers and friends are encouraged to bring family members to enjoy one or all the above activities with their paid admission. Plan to renew your annual membership or just buy a ticket for the day. Geoman may even have some LPG’s (lovely parting gifts) for those who explore the exhibit and brave the world of volcanoes!

GAIN One-Day Classroom Workshop on Population & Global Health 9am-4pm

 

Join us at the Odyssey Charter School (2251 S Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 8914) for a content workshop with Chris Ryan exploring world demographic trends and issues of global health. Participants will earn 1/2 state re-cert credits for this class. Lunch will be on your own. You can bring a lunch, but will also have time to go out and pick something up. Note: this is primarily a content session and will be most applicable to middle school and high school social studies teachers, although all are welcome. To register, please send an email to GeomanLVNV@aol.com by Friday March 8th. Our space at Odyssey can easily accommodate 25 teachers. We have 17 currently on the roster, so please feel free to share with colleagues.

GAIN/Nat Geo Movie Night at the Springs Preserve - March 20, 2018

Join us on Tuesday evening March 20th to celebrate the Spring Equinox at the Springs Preserve and see two of Nat Geo's most recent large format films - Jerusalem & Living in the Age of Airplanes. The human geography of one of the world's holiest cities is the focus our first film Jerusalem, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. Explore how its physical geography gives life and meaning to all three of the regions monotheistic faiths and meet three remarkable young women who call the old city home. After a dessert filled intermission discover how the world we live in today was shaped by modern aviation as Harrison Ford narrates Living in the Age of Airplanes. The geographic theme of movement takes center stage as we explore the history of transportation and the revolutionary technology that connects the people and places of our planet like never before. There is no charge, but this event is by invitation only, as it takes place after hours. Geography Awareness Week Event!

Who: Students, Parents & Teachers – map lovers of all ages.

What: The Nat Geo Giant Traveling Map of South America!

When: November 18 & 19 - The end of Geography Awareness              Week 2016. Visit Friday from 4:00pm until 10:00pm or            Saturday from 11:00am until 8:00pm.

 Where: Outside Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay.

 Why: To explore the Nat Geo Giant Traveling Map of South America and learn about the physical and human geography of South American. And, to learn about the CONAPAC’s Peruvian Amazon Adopt-a-School Program and find out how your school can provide basic school supplies to students in the Amazon and help save the rainforest one child at a time!

 Join us and visit Shark Reef if it has been a while since your last visit. The aquarium is open until 10pm both evenings. Admission for Nevada residents is $17 / $12 for ages 4-12. Geoman will have Lovely Parting Gifts for both teachers and students - including maps, posters, and globes!

GAIN Two-Day Field Course / OCT. 7-8

Join GAIN and Black Canyon River Adventures for a unique classroom & field experience October 7-8, 2016. This class will be limited to 50 teachers and will have a Friday evening classroom component from 4:30pm to 9:30pm and a Saturday field trip to the Black Canyon of the Colorado River with approximate hours of 8:00am until 3:00pm. One free, state re-certification credit will be available to participants. GAIN will be splitting the $90 cost of the field portion with teachers. To register you must do two things. 1. Email Herb Thompson at GeomanLVNV@aol.com with your name, school, and grade or subject taught ASAP. 2. Send a check for $45.00 made out to the Board of Regents to Herb at 3470 Wayne Street - Las Vegas, NV 89121. Sorry, we are sure this trip will fill with teachers, so we do not expect any spaces to be available for non-school participants or family members. When I have both an email and check I will confirm your place on the trip. Checks will not be deposited until the week following the class. Of course GAIN will provide dinner and drinks on Friday evening and lunch and drinks are included in the price of the canyon trip as well. Details on where the Friday evening class will be held and where and when to meet for the field excursion will be sent to confirmed participants about two weeks prior to our first meeting.

One UNR Graduate Credit / Friday evening class will be at LVA & the bus will depart from Chaparral HS on Saturday morning. Will include dinner, transportation, and entry to the West Rim, but not access to the Sky Walk. Participants will buy their own lunch on Saturday. 4:30pm - 9:30pm on Friday & 8:00am - 5:00pm on Saturday.

GAIN Statewide Meeting & Death Valley Field Class

·         GAIN will be picking up the cost of the two night stay for participants. We’ll also be providing food, non-alcoholic drinks, and dessert during our welcome content session on Friday evening between 6pm and 10pm.

·         Participants will be responsible for their own transportation and for breakfast (a Denny’s in on property) both mornings and lunch in Death Valley on Saturday.

·         Southern Nevada teachers are encouraged to car pool and I’ll do my best to facilitate that process after folks are registered online.

·         Northern Nevada teachers – Chris will be driving a van down from a rendezvous point in Reno/Carson on Friday afternoon. He will have to leave no later than 2pm, so if it’s possible for you to get out early or take half of a personal day for this professional development opportunity please consider it.

·         One, free NVDOE recertification credit will be offered to those who attend our entire program and complete the subsequent assignment.

·         Discover the history of Beatty, NV & Rhyolite, NV and experience the varied landscapes of Death Valley National Park, CA.

·         Learn about upcoming GAIN professional development classes and institutes, future outreach activities, and our policy initiatives for 2015-2016.

·         Participants will need to register online after September 27th at www.GAINevada.org and also call (you can do so now) to make hotel reservations (775-553-2419) by the deadline of October 9th. Ask for the GAIN block which has 35 rooms available.

The Geographic Alliance In Nevada and the Library of Congress -Teaching with Primary Sources Western Region invite you to join us for a six-day geography institute designed for secondary social studies teachers.

 ASGI (Alliance Semester Geography Workshop) 2015 Southern Nevada

February 20-21     Southwest Career & Technical Academy

March 20-21          Las Vegas Academy & Mojave National Preserve

May 1-2                 Las Vegas Academy

Three UNR graduate credits will be available for between $150 & $210. Space is limited to 25 middle school & high school teachers. Friday sessions will be from 4:30pm until 9:30pm & Saturdays will be full day sessions starting at 9am and ending at 4pm with exception the field day schedule which could be slightly longer.

 In February participants will explore Library of Congress resources and practice using newly designed tools for analyzing maps, images, cartoons, audio-visual clips, and documents from a geographic lens. TPS staff will lead these sessions.

 In March we’ll have content sessions with Chris Ryan exploring Historic Geography & enjoy a full-day field excursion to the Mojave National Preserve – including the Joshua Tree forests, the Kelso Dunes, the restored Union Pacific Depot, and Lava Beds/Cinder Cones National Natural Landmark.

In May we’ll have lesson sessions with Herb Thompson and GAIN TC’s exploring maps – mental, paper, and virtual & enjoy primary source activity presentations created by fellow participants.
